The home of Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy (TIIP) — an integrative model of mental health care grounded in the core principles of Islam while drawing upon empirical truths in psychology. Learn its foundations, connect with trained practitioners, and grow the field together.
What is TIIP?
TIIP is situated within an Islamic epistemological and ontological framework — offering an account of the nature and composition of the human psyche, its drives, health, pathology, mechanisms of psychological change, and principles of healing. An integrative approach lets clinicians draw on empirically validated interventions, culturally and religiously adapted, alongside exploratory Islamic interventions of promising value.

From the Khalil Center Foundations of Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy training — the philosophical and clinical ground the model is built on.
Three sources of knowledge held in equality: the senses (ḥissī), truthful reports (khabar — revelation and creation), and reason (ʿaql). Mental health sits at the meeting point of empirical, revelational, and rational knowledge.
The human being is outer (ẓāhir) and inner (bāṭin): one subtle essence (al-laṭīfah al-rabbāniyyah) manifesting as heart (qalb), intellect (ʿaql), spirit (rūḥ), and inclination (nafs) — interacting, interchangeable, and interconnected.
Health is more than symptom relief: proximity to God and His Messenger, God-consciousness (iḥsān), and a meaningful life tied to original purpose — melting bio-psycho-social-spiritual barriers along the way.
Illness is the maladaptive functioning of the psyche's elements — read on a continuum from clinical range to saintly rank, distinguishing exogenous and endogenous presentations after al-Balkhī, and weighing spiritual as well as clinical dysfunction.

The framework at a glance
TIIP conceptualizes the psyche as interacting elements — cognition, spirit, inclination, and emotion — all feeding into the qalb, the heart. Distress is read not only through symptoms, but through the state of each element and how they fall in and out of balance.
From this map, the model derives a structured, four-stage process of change — one that honors the patient’s faith as a resource and aims at qalb salīm, the sound and healthy heart.
